About Greg Sheres

Greg Sheres has spent his life designing and creating beautiful things. He studied art and engineering at Columbia University before launching his career as a furniture designer in the 1980s. He got his start at a time when viewing furniture as art was virtually unheard of, and his work played a huge role in changing that perception.

Greg started his own design company in 1989. In the decades since, he has traveled the world in search of the best materials, hardware and manufacturing infrastructure to bring his designs to life. Every piece of furniture he creates is the result of that journey.

Today, you’ll find his work in private collections of professional athletes, actors, and musicians, as well as in everyday homes and businesses. He has won international furniture design competitions, served as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Furniture Designers, and been a featured guest on Home and Garden Network TV

Sheres Furniture

More Than Furniture

Let’s rethink the word “furniture.” For many of us, furniture is something we ignore and undervalue. It’s something that becomes part of the landscape of our home until it fades into the background and we forget it’s even there. We walk right past it every day, but we often fail to see it. To say that something has “become part of the furniture” implies that it simply exists, and nothing more.

Greg Sheres furniture is not made to be ignored or forgotten about. It’s bold, unique, and timeless. Greg likes to call it Jewelry for Your Home. Great furniture doesn’t fade from memory or recede to the periphery. It jumps right out at you, accenting and amplifying the beauty of the space it’s in. It can be transformative.

“I think furniture should not be boring, and it should have a life of its own. It should give the person who experiences it something that they didn’t have before they walked in the room.”

Ageless Materials, Timeless Designs

Not everyone knows how to react the first time they see a Sheres table or chair. This isn’t furniture that is familiar, commonplace or nostalgic. It’s different. It uses lines, angles and curves in ways you might not expect, and it often calls into question one’s concept of how a table or chair should look. But once you see it, you might find it hard to look away.

Greg makes furniture using a wide range of high-quality materials, from wood and glass to metal and stone. He is especially fond of stainless steel, both for its beauty and its durability—his stainless steel furnishings will doubtless outlast us all.

The Process

Every piece of furniture starts out the same way: as an idea. Whether he is designing a luxury home, furnishing a five-star hotel or creating a single cocktail table, each of Greg’s designs starts from a single spark of inspiration.

Out of a hundred sketches in Greg’s notebook, perhaps a dozen will go on to become fully fleshed-out designs. Of those, only a tiny handful will develop to the physical prototype stage. On a good day, one of those prototypes might be good enough to become a final product.

Greg has traveled all over the world to find the best production facilities to bring his designs to life. He has made furniture in the United States, Italy, China and the Philippines. Traveling has only further fueled his creativity and passion, and regardless of the location, the integrity of the design and vision is always the top priority.

An art form first, a business second. For over 25 years, Greg has brought passion and creativity to his design work focusing on the beauty and integrity of making good furniture. Never sacrificing quality to save money, he hires top manufacturing staff and uses superior materials, hardware and packing systems.
